4 First Asian Physics Olympiad in Malaysia by Pua Chang Hong from IFM (Institut Fizik Malaysia)

The Asian Physics Olympiad 2024 (APhO 2024) was successfully held in Kampar, Perak, Malaysia, from June 3 to 10, 2024. Kampar, a historic town in the state of Perak, provided a unique and picturesque setting for the Olympiad. This was the first time Malaysia hosted the Physics Olympiad, or any international Science Olympiad. The event was organized by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and attracted a total of 208 students forming 28 teams, along with 111 leaders and observers from 27 economies. The opening ceremony took place on June 4, 2024, at UTAR Kampar Campus Dewan Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik, as shown in Fig. 1. It was officiated by Malaysia’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang.

In his opening address, Minister Chang stated: “As we stand on the threshold of this prestigious competition, let us reflect on the essence of physics - a discipline that unveils the mysteries of the universe, challenges our understanding of the world, and inspires us to push the boundaries of human knowledge. Physics is a quest for knowledge, and mastering this discipline will unfold many opportunities to pursue careers in high-tech industries, either as professionals or technology developers. The Asian Physics Olympiad stands as a testament to the collective dedication of nations towards nurturing young minds in the pursuit of scientific excellence. It is a platform that brings together some of the brightest young minds from around the world to showcase their talent and passion for physics.”

At the opening ceremony, the President of UTAR, Ir. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ewe Hong Tat, remarked: “Physics plays a crucial role in our daily lives, impacting everything from the simplest motions like walking and cooking to more complex processes such as weather prediction, communication, and medical diagnostics. At UTAR, we recognize the importance of physics in understanding the natural world, advancing technology, solving problems, fostering critical thinking, driving innovation, increasing productivity, and connecting us globally. Physics not only helps us progress in scientific research but also enhances our everyday experiences and conveniences.”

As noted in Ref. [6], “student competitions can act as potent enrichment measures and complement formal schooling in fostering students’ motivation as well as promoting their skills.” Traditionally, many physics competitions serve the goals of identifying the most capable students and recognizing the efforts of engaged and motivated average-ability students [7].

In this APhO, a total of 41 gold, 25 silver, and 47 bronze medals, along with 32 honorable mentions, were awarded to the student participants. The AAPPS award for the Best Male Performer in the Asia-Pacific region was given to Qian Kunxiao from China, and the AAPPS Best Female Performer was awarded to Heidi Ruohua Gong from Australia. Dr. Muhammad Al-Zamil, the consultant from Mawhiba, Saudi Arabia, welcomed all teams to participate in the APhO 2025 in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, from May 4 to 12, 2025. Additionally, the Korean Physical Society, represented by Prof. Suklyun Hong, invited all teams to participate in the APhO in 2026.

4.1 Other highlights of APhO 2024

4.1.1 Guest lectures and workshops

APhO 2024 featured guest lectures and workshops conducted by renowned physicists and educators. These sessions provided participants with insights into the latest developments in physics research and education, inspiring them to pursue further studies and careers in physics. Figure 2 shows the plenary talk delivered by Dr. Juan Carlos Algaba Marcos.
