2 Honoring Academician Nguyen Van Hieu: symposium and book launch on his 85th Birthday by VPS
On July 21, 2023, in Hanoi, on the occasion of Academician Nguyen Van Hieu’s 85th birthday and as a commemoration event a year following his passing, the Vietnam Physical Society and three other institutions (the Institute of Physics; the Institute of Materials Science; and Vietnam National University (VNU)-University of Engineering and Technology) co-organized a symposium to highlight the diverse activities and significant contributions of Academician Nguyen Van Hieu to the fields of science and technology in Vietnam. On this occasion, the Vietnam Physical Society introduced the book “Professor, Academician Nguyen Van Hieu—an outstanding physicist,” ISBN: 978–604-357–163-9. The book comprises 60 articles across 505 pages, a valuable compilation of materials contributed by his colleagues and students, and journalists, all discussing the exceptional achievements of the prominent theoretical physicist, who was honored with the Lenin Prize from the Soviet Union in 1986 and the Ho Chi Minh Prize from Vietnam in 1996 for his research accomplishments.
Academician Nguyen Van Hieu was president of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology from 1983 to 1994, and founder of the Institute of Physics (in 1969), the Institute of Materials Science (1993), and VNU-University of Engineering and Technology (2004). He was president of the Vietnam Physical Society from 1991 to 2002, and in 1989 he was also a founding member of the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS). From 2005 to 2010, he served as chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP).
