APCTP Scientific Activities

The Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) was established in 1996 to promote activities in theoretical physics in the Asia Pacific region. The center pursues the highest quality topical research in focused areas of theoretical physics and promotes cooperation among scientists from its member countries and regions, and beyond. In order to promote research activities and international cooperation, the center supports various scientific activities such as Focus Research Programs (focus programs, topical research programs) and Academic Programs (schools, conferences & workshops and joint/external activities) on the current issues of physics societies. The center also runs outreach programs to raise public awareness in science.

Focus Research Programs are intensive research programs that range from two weeks to several months for focused research and discussions on current topics, and also include a series of mini-workshops and seminars. It enables local research groups and communities in the Asia Pacific region to develop international collaborations and relationships.

Academic Programs are short-term programs designed to initiate international research activities through conferences, workshops, or schools. These also include joint programs with institutions under cooperation agreements. These programs discuss innovative research topics, foster young scientists, and contribute to form research cooperation networks among diverse physics groups and organizations in the Asia Pacific region and beyond. These programs may be held at APCTP or other places in Korea, if needed, or oversea venues for joint programs. The educational and training aspects of these programs are viewed as one of the most important missions of APCTP since its establishment.

The summary of scientific activities of APCTP in 2015 is listed in Tables 1 and 2 below. We have held 53 programs in 2015 and have met 5,028 participants from 43 countries. The statistics shows that about 52.5% of participants were from Korea, 26.2% were from the member countries and 21.2% were from the rest of the world. We always welcome the proposals of scientists, regardless of their respective nationalities, to organize academic activities in physics under the support of APCTP. The academic activities calendar of 2016 is listed in Table 3 and the details on how to organize meetings and how to join planned events can be found in the homepage of the center: https://www.apctp.org. We heartily invite scholars, in particular, from the Asia Pacific region, to actively join these academic events.
