The 5th International Meeting on Frontiers of Physics (IMFP 2017), held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the hotel Pullman Kuala Lumpur Bangsar from Dec. 3-7, 2017, was jointly organized by Institut Fizik Malaysia and the Department of Physics, University of Malaya (UM). IMFP 2017 was supported by a generous external activity grant from the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) as well as the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and Kumpulan Ikhtisas Sains Malaysia Sendiran Berhad (KISM). IMFP 2017 attracted more than 110 international and local physicists, and included plenary luminaries such as Prof. Gui-Lu Long (Tsinghua University; president of the Association of Asia Pacific Physics Societies (AAPPS)), Prof. Fu-Jen Kao (National Yang Ming University; deputy president of AAPPS), Prof. Jun'ichi Yokoyama (Tokyo University; secretary-general of AAPPS), Prof. Kazuhiro Tanaka (Asian Nuclear Physics Association(ANPhA) & KEK), Prof. Geoffrey Taylor (University of Melbourne), Prof. Aimin Song (University of Manchester), Prof. Seunghwan Kim (POSTECH), Prof. James Sullivan (Australian National University), Prof. Takaya Ohashi (Tokyo Metropolitan University, Prof. Ruiqin Zhang (City University of Hong Kong), Prof. Pak Ming Hui (Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Prof. Y. P. Lee (Hanyang University). A keynote address was provided by Prof. Woo-Sung Jung (APCTP). A total of 13 plenary and keynote talks and 79 invited and contributed talks were presented during the three day conference. There were about 110 participants including more than 50 participants from Australia, China (including Hong Kong), India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Nepal, the Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. This conference was unique with various special sessions in addition to the plenary sessions. The invited and contributed talks were organized under the following special sessions: astrophysics; biological and medical physics; complex systems & multi-disciplinary physics; exotic atomic, molecular & optical physics; condensed matter & material physics; nuclear physics; particle physics & fields; plasma physics; and statistical physics. These sessions provided a closer research platform for local physicists to interact with leading researchers in their respective fields from the Asia-Pacific region.

During the conference dinner, the vice-chancellor of University of Malaya, Datuk Ir (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hashim warmly welcomed the participants to IMFP 2017 as well as to multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysia. He stressed that the Malaysian government is fully committed to strengthening the country's competency in R & D, science and innovation. In addition, he challenged the physicists at UM to raise the bar and be among the best in Asia and in the world.

In conjunction with the 5th International Meeting on Frontiers of Physics 2017 (IMFP 2017) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a delegation from the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS) together with invited speakers from IMFP 2017 visited the Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuclear Malaysia) in Bangi, Selangor on December 5, 2017. The delegation was comprised of the following individuals: Prof. Dr. Kazuhiro Tanaka (KEK, J-PARC; chair of the AAPPS Division of Nuclear Physics), Prof. Dr. Tohru Motobayashi (RIKEN, Japan), Prof. Dr. Weiping Liu (vice chair of the Asia Nuclear Physics Association; deputy director of CIAE(China Institute of Atomic Energy), China), Dr. Ong Hooi Jin (Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University) and Dr. Li Hau-Bin (Academia Sinica, Taiwan). The visitors were received by the director general of the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, Dr. Mohd. Ashhar Bin Hj. Khalid; the senior director for the management program, Dr. Wan Shaffiey Bin Hj. Wan Abdullah; and the director of the technical support division, Dr. Siti A'iasah Hashim. Among the items discussed were Nuclear Malaysia's role in the advancement of nuclear science and technology for the purposes of knowledge generation, wealth creation, and the societal and national well-being of Malaysia, as well as AAPPS's role in promoting knowledge in physics in the Asia Pacific region. After discussions, the visitors were brought to visit several facilities within the Nuclear Malaysia complex: the 1MW TRIGA PUSPATI Reactor; the Centre of Computed Tomography and Industrial Imaging; and the Gamma Green House. Close cooperation between AAPPS and Nuclear Malaysia is welcomed through international collaboration in research, training and education, and other related activities. Additional information about the Malaysian Nuclear Agency can be found at www.nuclearmalaysia.gov.my, and at https://www.facebook.com/NuklearMalaysia.
